The ksar of Ait Benhaddou is one of the most gorgeous among the many that exist in Morocco.

A ksar is a fortified village which fulfilled a protecting role for a given community. It a conglomerate of adobe buildings (made of clay, manure and straw) encircled by high defensives walls. The one of Ait Benhaddou was located upon a sandstone hill on the path between Marrakesh and Ouarzazate, the desert’s gate. It served as a setting for movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, Prince of Persia or the Gladiator. (more…)

Sortelha and Serra da Estrela

Serra da Estrela is a mountain range located in the center interior of Portugal.

This is where you can find the country’s 2nd highest peak, Torre (the Tower) with 1993 meters. The highest overall is the Pico mountain, located on the homonymous island of the Azores archipelago. It is 2531 meters tall.

It’s a region that belongs to the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. It occupies 21 municipalities, with its majority being part of the Guarda district and the remaining belonging to Castelo Branco. (more…)

The medieval village of Monsaraz

The village of Monsaraz is comprised within the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz.

Is located in the Alentejo region, in the south of Portugal. It’s one of the oldest villages in Portugal and it´s classified as a National Monument. Located at the top of a hill, the white and steep streets are encompassed by medieval ramparts, standing out amidst the vast plains.

The region in which one can currently find Monsaraz has been inhabited since the prehistoric times, something that is underlined by the megalithic vestiges founded there. There are around 150 archeologic findings which have inhabited the region for 6000 years. (more…)

Sintra is a village located in the outskirts of Lisbon, between forested ravines and fresh headwaters.

It has a unique weather due to the proximity of the Sintra Mountains and many times finds itself wrapped in mist, something that gives it a halo of mystery. In the past, the mountains were called “Monte da Lua” (Mount of Moon), a name given to it by the Romans.

Mértola is the most Arab city of Portugal

Mértola is a village in the district of Beja, in the southernmost point of the province of Baixo Alentejo, which is located at the confluence of the Oeiras Creek with Guadiana River. It has an enormous historical heritage, comprising traces of different periods.

The National Commission for UNESCO has already included the village in its map of locations that fulfill the requirements to become a world heritage site. (more…)
